Atlanta, GA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Amare Stoudemire poured in a season-high 43
points and grabbed 16 rebounds to lead the Phoenix Suns over the Atlanta Hawks, 115-106, at Philips Arena.
"It feels good," said Stoudemire. "The main thing is that we won and for me
to have a game like that was a bonus for me."
Steve Nash added 14 points and dished out 13 assists for Phoenix, which is a
perfect 13-0 on the road against Eastern Conference opponents. Shawn Marion
donated 21 points and Leandro Barbosa registered 19 points for the Suns, who
have won four straight games.
Joe Johnson's layup with 9:57 left to play briefly put Atlanta ahead 93-92,
but the Suns recaptured the lead for good with back-to-back three-pointers by
Barbosa and James Jones.
Atlanta got as close as 103-99 when Johnson drilled a turnaround jumper with
5:36 remaining, but Phoenix answered with a Nash driving layup and two Marion
free throws to take a 107-99 advantage with 2:42 showing on the clock.
The Hawks never threatened thereafter.
"Toward the end of the game they executed their offense and ran their plays to
perfection," said Johnson. "We couldn't get any stops at the end."
Johnson deposited 28 points and Marvin Williams added 23 points and 10
rebounds for the Hawks, who have lost three of their last four games. Anthony
Johnson scored 17 points in his Hawks debut and Josh Smith finished with 14
for Atlanta, which finished 1-2 in its three-game homestand.
Two Smith free throws put Atlanta ahead 12-6 early in the first quarter, but
the Suns responded by outscoring the Hawks 32-12 the rest of the stanza and
took a 38-24 lead heading into the second period. Stoudemire scored 18 points
in the session.
The Hawks opened the second with a 20-5 run, capped by a Solomon Jones layup,
giving Atlanta a 44-43 edge midway through the quarter.
Moments later Phoenix embarked on a 13-0 surge, highlighted by a Marion dunk
on its way to a 60-53 lead at the intermission.
Both teams exchanged buckets in a high-energy third period and the Suns took a
90-85 advantage into the final quarter.
